The long queues for petrol, the extreme hyperinflation and devalued currency that I witnessed in the South American country caused a panic deep within me.The longer I spent in Venezuela, the more I optimistically concluded that while South Africa has many, many problems, we are far too resilient as a people to succumb to complete ruin.

But my optimism for South Africa faltered when Covid-19 dawned and when we saw savage-like looting of state funds meant to save lives. It showed us how fragile our democracy actually is. It gave the doomsayers validation. It left optimists like myself heartbroken.Since then, a chorus has grown louder about how South Africa is on its way to a failed state.
