After Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston, Mayor Sylvester Turner got Houston into the Resilient Cities Network, preparing better for crises

Mayor Turner flew to New York City to meet with board members of the Resilient Cities Network in March.After Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston, Mayor Sylvester Turner wanted to take further action in the city's recovery to include preparing for future crises. A year later, Houston joined the Resilient Cities Network.includes cities from across the world committed to building urban resilience and sharing those ideas and resources.

Mayor Turner and other board members of the Resilient Cities Network met in person for the first time since 2020.After getting back from his trip, he spoke to the Houston Chronicle about the city's work as a resilient member.The city of Houston in the last eight years, has faced seven federally declared disasters.

Q: To the everyday Houstonian, what do you want them to remember when it comes to Houston being a resilient city?From each incident you try to learn how to address it going forward — you don't build back. Let's say like after Hurricane Harvey, you don't build back to where you were. The goal is to build forward. I think put us in a better place to be more resilient when these shocks and stresses come because they will come in some form or fashion.

So the answer is yes. Now, we're not where we want to be, or need to be, but we are much further than we were in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019.
