Q&A: ESPN's David Cone on Astros' start, changes under new management and 'sustained excellence'

ESPN analyst David Cone, who’ll help call Sunday’s Astros-Phillies game at Minute Maid Park, called the Houston’s run of four World Series in six seasons “a sustained excellence that’s truly remarkable.”The Astros will again be in the national spotlight with Sunday night’s series finale against the Phillies airing on ESPN.

Q: It’s funny to think about the defending champs sending a message early in the season, but what did shutting out the Rays twice at home and sweeping the Braves show?It showed maybe a little bit that maybe the Rays are human at this point. Somebody had to kind of at least play on their level, and of course it was Houston. It’s a big statement when you face such a hot team and a very good team as well and you’re able to neutralize them. At least it’ll feel like you are a front-line team as well.

Q: Are you surprised at the ability to keep churning out players like that despite not having first- and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021 because of the sign-stealing sanctions?Yes, without a doubt. They’ve done a great job on the international free agent side, especially the pitching side. Some of these forgotten prospects, maybe a little older prospects on the international side that they took a chance on and it’s really paid big dividends for them.
