Putin hails North Korea 'firmly supporting the special military operations of Russia'
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday hailed North Korea for"firmly supporting" Moscow's war in Ukraine ahead of a visit to Pyongyang set to boost defence ties between the two nuclear-armed countries.
Putin's trip has triggered"concern" in Washington, after the Pentagon said in May debris analysis proved North Korean ballistic missiles were already being fired on Ukraine's battlefields. Both countries are under rafts on UN sanctions, Pyongyang since 2006 over banned nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and Moscow over the invasion of Ukraine.
UN sanctions on the North"are frankly disadvantageous to us" Alexander Zhebin, head of the Centre for Korean Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences told RIA Novosti. The United States was"concerned" about the trip because of the security implications for Ukraine - and South Korea, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters.
This may include a"comprehensive strategic partnership treaty" which will outline future cooperation and deal with"security issues", Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov was quoted as saying by state-run Russian news agencies."Certainly, both countries are facing serious economic dilemmas. But regardless of the words used, current relations will focus on defence cooperation," Patrick Cronin, chair for Asia-Pacific Security at the Hudson Institute, told the Yonhap news agency.
