The possible death of Prighozin and many of his top commanders decapitates the Wagner Group and restores Putin’s reputation after the abortive June mutiny.

The presumed death of the high profile leader of Russia’s Wagner Group has not only thrown the future of the mercenary group deeply in doubt but also strengthened President Vladimir Putin’s hand, after its short-lived June rebellion left him looking weak and paralyzed.

Prigozhin continued to travel freely between Russia, Belarus and recently Africa, raising eyebrows for many members of the Russian elite, who were stunned that he was not punished. Eyewitnesses described two bangs before the plane tumbled from the sky, local media reported. The plane’s tail separated from the body and landed just over a mile from the main crash site. Questions remained on the cause of the crash, the plane’s trajectory before the crash and the reasons that so many top Wagner commanders were on one plane.

She said the presumed deaths of Prigozhin and his commanders marked the effective end of the rebellion, with details of the conditions of the security guarantee that Putin offered Prigozhin unclear.
