Purple patch or purple pain? The blessing and curse of Kalahari sugilite
In textiles, the hue was particularly difficult to reproduce in natural dyes. The ancient Tyrians managed to obtain a bold and lasting purple from the mucus of a Mediterranean sea snail, but it required some 250 000 molluscs to yield just one ounce of usable dye.
Purple is also a shade rarely found in gemstones, and is coveted by the more esoterically oriented for their purported ability to bring stability and prosperity to their owner. But that’s hardly been the case when it comes to rich sugilite deposits in South Africa, where the vibrant purple gem has for decades been a thorn in the side for all those who inadvertently mine it.South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
