Purdue missed a number of opportunities Friday night, but the most glaring came in the opening minute of the fourth quarter when Jayla Smith missed a layup that would have cut Iowa's lead to three. The Hawkeyes quickly pushed the ball up to Kate Martin, who drilled an open 3 to kickstart the offense. Her basket was followed by three straight from Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark, who tacked on a jumper, a layup and a triple to push Iowa's lead to 55-43 with 7:07 left in regulation.Purdue's offense was never able to find its footing
The Boilermakers shooters were very good in spurts. They hit 3-of-5 field goals over a stretch midway through the second quarter to cut Iowa's lead to four, then went on another 3-for-5 spurt in the third to tie the score at 36.Conversely, Iowa recovered from a stretch of five consecutive misses between the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters with six straight buckets. It hit nine of its final 12 shots from the field to pull away.
The nation's best player was held scoreless in the second quarter and had just 10 entering the fourth. She went off for 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting with a couple 3s amidst that game-defining run in the fourth and finished with a game-high 22 points.
