Sikhs make up just 2 per cent of India’s 1.4 billion people, but they are a majority in Punjab, a state of 30 million.

“Now every family wants to send its sons and daughters to Canada, as farming here is not lucrative,” said the elder Mr Nijjar. He was speaking at the holiest of Sikh shrines, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where many students go to pray or give thanks for student visas.
