Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló silent despite promises to address the island as impeachment process looms.

Demonstrators, some waving Puerto Rican national flags, gather in front of the governor's mansion La Fortaleza, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Wednesday, July 24, 2019. Hundreds of thousands of Puerto Rico have been outraged by leaked, obscenity-laced online chats between Gov. Ricardo Rossello and his advisers, and have protested for nearly two weeks demanding his resignation.

Rodríguez, a member of Rosselló’s pro-statehood party, said legislators had initially agreed to set aside the impeachment process and give the governor until 5 p.m. Wednesday to announce that he was going to resign. Thousands of protesters gathered around the governor’s mansion in a renewed push to oust Rosselló, and the president of Puerto Rico’s House of Representatives issued the embattled governor an ultimatum: Either take the best decision for a U.S. territory demanding his resignation or face an impeachment process.

By Wednesday afternoon, nearly two dozen officers in full riot gear marched out of the governor’s mansion toward protesters. The demonstration remained calm, although protesters led by musicians including Bad Bunny and Residente banged on pots, waved Puerto Rican flags and blew whistles.
