Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson faces criticism from opposition parties but remains committed to his department's goals.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson stated that he remains undeterred by false reports, political maneuvering, or individuals under investigation for wrongdoing. He pledged to continue his work within the department, emphasizing its commitment to serving the public good.
Macpherson highlighted the Durban Declaration, a significant agreement forged between the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Government. This landmark initiative aims to dismantle criminal syndicates operating within the construction sector. He noted a decrease in reports of construction stoppages, attributing this success to the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure's efforts within the Government of National Unity. Macpherson emphasized the department's proactive measures to secure public property, preventing land grabs, criminal activities, and theft. He underscored the importance of ensuring that public assets serve society rather than criminal elements. To achieve this, the department has obtained eviction orders for several properties, including the iconic Castle of Good Hope, preventing unauthorized occupation. Despite the progress made, Macpherson acknowledged that certain individuals within Parliament aim to hinder the department's success. He specifically mentioned ActionSA, the EFF, and some members of the ANC who, he alleged, propagate fake news through various means, including paid journalists, AI-generated voice notes, and manipulated WhatsApp messages. Macpherson expressed confidence in the department's future, stating that it will attract R100 billion in private infrastructure investment within the next year. This investment will position Infrastructure South Africa as a hub for major projects. He cited the National Treasury's recently issued Public-Private Partnership regulation reform as a significant step towards achieving the government's R100 billion private sector funding goal. The minister outlined a series of initiatives aimed at stimulating infrastructure development, including the establishment of a Special Projects Unit to expedite existing projects and revive stalled ones like the Sarah Baartman Centre for Remembrance. He also highlighted plans to redevelop smaller harbors, such as Hout Bay Harbour, into thriving tourism and economic centers, potentially emulating the success of the V&A Waterfront. Macpherson concluded that the department will finalize reforms to the Expanded Public Works Programme, ensuring it fosters permanent employment and skills development rather than serving as a platform for political manipulation
