The public shared concerns with the Alabama Public Library Service board about the placement of LGBTQ+ books in public libraries.
Almost 100 people shared their concern about the placement of certain books in Alabama public libraries.MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Emotions were high at Tuesday’s Alabama Public Library Service meeting, where almost 100 people shared concerns about the placement of LGBTQ+ books in public libraries.
“This is an attempt by some to turn back the clock to another century and to deny respect for, and even outlaw, people whose lifestyles and sexual choices are different from their own,” one speaker said. Some speakers said there are books currently in children’s libraries that are sexually explicit. For example, parent and teacher Elizabeth Stewart says she found a booked titled “It’s Perfectly Normal” with illustrations of sexual intercourse in the 7-year-old section at a Huntsville library.
However, Jessica Hayes with the Alabama Library Association says some of the controversial books presented to the board are housed in adult library sections, not children’s sections.“Our job is to be a political nonpartisan part of this community. We are committed to training people on how to be a constitutional librarian,” said Hayes.
