During suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane's term, her Office spent R147 million on legal costs – at least R14.6 million of which funded her challenges to the impeachment inquiry process against her.

Mkhwebane has sought to blame that increased legal bill on Madonsela's crucial Nkandla report court victory, which confirmed that Public Protector remedial action was binding unless set aside by a court.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
