PsiQuantum will be the main tenant of a newly announced quantum campus in Illinois, where it will pursue its goal to create a fault-tolerant million-qubit computer.
Some of today’s next-generation technologies seem more like magic than science. A good example is how PsiQuantum is able to convert particles of light into quantum qubits that have the potential to perform unimaginably large quantum computations. The company’s stated mission is to build and deploy the world’s first useful photonic quantum computer—leveraging existing infrastructure to build and scale these fault-tolerant systems as fast as possible.
‘Institutions Are Coming’—$35 Trillion U.S. Dollar Collapse Predicted To Trigger A Bitcoin Price Boom To Rival GoldNetflix’s Best New Mystery Crime Show Has A Perfect 100% Critic Score “We talk a lot about the semiconductor process enablement and its devices,” he said. “But we've been building integrated systems for many years. The first one in 2022 was the most complex quantum photonics system ever made at that time. And what we have built in the U.K. is probably an order of magnitude more complex than the 2022 system. We learn a huge amount by building these small systems because they allow us to gradually de-risk unknown photonic and classical territory.
All its components use C-band wavelengths in order to work with optical fiber for communications. Transmitting PsiQuantum’s photon qubits through optical fiber opens the door for greater design flexibility and the development of novel functions. “One big downside with the spontaneous photon source is that it’s probabilistic,” Dr. Shadbolt said. “Spontaneous means we don’t always get a photon, so we have to use brute force overengineering to overcome the nondeterminism. However, there is an important upside to this method: it can be made from the same waveguide material that we’re already using. That makes it easier to manufacture than an on-demand source.
“We built a facility in San Jose, California with five clean rooms,” Dr. Shadbolt said. “We designed the biggest molecular-beam epitaxy tool ever made. As far as we know, it's the first ever 300mm molecular-beam tool for BTO deposition. Building it was a huge risk for the company. It was previously one of our highest-priority risks, but in the last few months we have been able produce extremely high-performing switches using BTO material derived from that facility.”Dr.
