Five mayors and two First Nations chiefs came together to call for an eight-lane tunnelled crossing by 2025 or 2026.

Premier John Horgan said his government will work with a group of Metro Vancouver mayors and First Nations who say they want to see the new George Massey crossing expedited and tunnelled, instead of building a bridge.

Since then, the province has consulted with municipalities and First Nations in Metro Vancouver, and a business case for some kind of replacement is expected to be prepared by 2020. He believes they will be able to move quickly now that there is agreement, but didn’t commit to either a bridge or a new tunnel.

Harvie and former Delta mayor Lois Jackson, who is now a councillor, long advocated for a bridge and were in favour of the previous government’s 10-lane proposal. Harvie said once that project was cancelled, things changed. The municipal election, which saw major shifts in governance across the region, also offered a chance to refresh.
