Residents of Delft, Cape Town, protested outside the Delft community health centre (CHC) demanding justice following the death of a one-year-old boy, Raziq John, who died at the clinic in December. They accused staff of negligence and unprofessionalism, calling for a task team investigation into the quality of care and deaths at the facility.
Dozens of angry residents of Delft in Cape Town protested outside the Delft community health centre (CHC) on Wednesday, complaining about treatment. They held up placards saying, 'We want justice' and 'Justice for Raziq', in reference to Raziq John, a one-year-old who died at the clinic in December.
The protesters demanded a task team be set up by the Western Cape Department of Health to investigate claims of unprofessionalism by health workers, the quality of care provided, and the deaths of patients. They also called for the centre to be extended and upgraded, and for the child unit to remain open at night and on weekends. This would ensure parents with young children wouldn't have to seek treatment at the trauma unit. Coka, a resident, explained that Delft has grown significantly, with nine new informal settlements, while the clinic has remained the same size. She added that security guards sometimes prevent people from entering, even questioning their illness before allowing access. This, she argued, is inappropriate as they are not medical professionals. Nabagah John, the mother of Raziq John, shared her tragic experience. She brought her one-year-old son for treatment on December 27th after he experienced breathing difficulties. Despite the nurses checking his vitals and assuring them he was fine, Raziq's condition worsened while his mother waited. He struggled to breathe, rolled his eyes, and ultimately died in her arms. She believes his life could have been saved if he had been immediately placed on a respirator upon arrival. Megan Davids, spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, responded to the concerns. She stated that they are deeply troubled by reports of negligence at Delft CHC and the alleged refusal of security personnel to allow patients entry. She clarified that the clinic is a primary healthcare facility lacking the equipment for specialized care. In such cases, patients are referred to appropriate facilities. Davids explained that Raziq's vitals were assessed, and medical intervention was provided for a severe chest infection. However, the staff requested the Flying Squad to transfer him to Tygerberg Hospital for further emergency care. Despite their efforts, the baby tragically passed away before transport arrived. She emphasized that the department takes all allegations of poor treatment very seriously and extended condolences to the affected families
