Proteas pip Sri Lanka to stay in it
Yesterday’s must-win encounter against Sri Lanka – a team the Proteas may have been forgiven for thinking they should be able to beat comfortably after recently beating them 3-0 in their own back yard – proved to be one last banana peel to negotiate in a game as enthralling as it was nerve-wracking.

Photo: Isuru Sameera Peiris/Gallo Images Miller , hobbled by a hamstring strain, rolled back the finisher years with two thumping sixes in that final over, before Kagiso Rabada – making amends for an expensive 18th over – scored the winning runs with a ball to spare.
An example of this carelessness was the perishing of Charith Asalanka while casually taking on Rabada’s arm for a cheeky second run in the ninth over. It was a dismissal that not only broke a promising 41-run partnership with Nissanka, but also prised open a wickets door the Sri Lankans were not able to close.
Tabraiz Shamsi, the leading bowler in the world in this format, led the bowling attack and was ably supported by Pretorius.
