Proteas batsman Heinrich Klaasen’s century celebration told the story of his knock against England in theKlaasen was as delighted to reach three figures as he was visibly drained and seemed to almost immediately regret expending any energy in the sweltering heat. The coastal city of Mumbai can get extremely hot and humid and the conditions that Klaasen had to bat in were extreme.
Klaasen would apologise to England bowler Mark Wood for his celebration which was both exuberant and in the quick’s face.Wood appeared to accept the apology in good spirits at the end of the over. Klaasen came to the wicket when Reeza Hendricks was dismissed for 85 leaving South Africa’s innings at a crossroads at 164 for 3.The Proteas No 5 then shared a 69-run stand with stand-in skipper Aiden Markram. Markram and David Miller lost their wickets in quick succession but the best was to come from Klaasen. He blasted his way to a hundred while sharing a 151-run stand with Marco Jansen where both men got the long wood out.“It’s up there with my best ever. The conditions were brutal.
“It’s like just breathing in hot air, and every time you try to run, it’s just sapping more and more energy.“It’s just like almost running in a sauna for the whole innings, which is what we obviously prep for – and we’re used to these conditions – but it still takes a lot out of the body.“Physically, I was not in a good space, but mentally, I had to dig very deep there.”“Jansen was next level … He kept me going, and should get this award. His runs are so vital,” Klaasen said.
