Los Gatos residents are worried about a proposed mixed-use development that would result in the demolition of the Ace Hardware store on Los Gatos Boulevard. Zack Franz, a longtime Los Gatos resident who has also been the store manager at Ace Hardware for over 20 years, said the store is a fixture in the community, a place where locals working on home improvement projects can turn to for guidance and supplies despite the rise of online shopping.
The application cites builder’s remedy, a provision of state law that allows developers to propose buildings of any size and height in the absence of a plan for all housing, otherwise known as a housing element. Arya filed its application before the town council approved its housing element in June.
Zack Franz, a longtime Los Gatos resident who has also been the store manager at Ace Hardware for over 20 years, said the store is a fixture in the community, a place where locals working on home improvement projects can turn to for guidance and supplies despite the rise of online shopping. “If you go forward with this, I would suggest that we recall each and every one of you, because this is insanity,” he told the council at its June meeting, drawing a round of applause from the audience.
