A wealthy property developer destroyed protected woodland so he could build holiday lets for profit, a court heard.

Locals ‘heard a great deal of noise and saw a digger being offloaded’ before they realised what was happening.An Eastleigh Borough Council worker told him the woodland was under a Tree Protection Order, which prohibits cutting, damaging or destroying the trees without the local planning authority’s written consent.

District Judge Peter Greenfield said: ‘Pausing at that stage, taking note of local opposition would have been a good idea. Clearly the local population were gravely affected by work on that site.Locals only knew what was happening to the woodland once they heard the digger ‘My view is there was a rush over the two days working early in the morning and late into the night – before a stop notice could be issued.
