Promises made: where the NDP and UCP stand on top issues in Alberta election campaign abpoli abvote

, as part of a pilot project to expand the reach of police officers in Edmonton and Calgary to help address crime.in April to hire 150 more police officers paired with 150 support staff, including social workers, addictions counsellors and community outreach staff in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Red Deer and Fort McMurray. The NDP said the bulk of the funding for those hires would come from restoring municipal police funding from the province cut by the UCP.

While the UCP has been floating the idea of a provincial police force since 2020, the New Democrats have been firm in their refusal to replace the RCMP.

The UCP has also long toyed with the idea of pulling out of the Canada Pension Plan and creating a provincial pension plan, but Smith has said she won’t campaign on sovereignty legislation, provincial police or the Alberta pension plan. Notley has said her party would enshrine the province’s participation in the CPP in law, preventing any future Alberta government from leaving the federal plan.

Danielle Smith has pledged to keep fighting the federal carbon tax, which was instituted in provinces that don’t have one. While in government, Notley’s climate leadership plan included an economy-wide price on carbon which hit $30 per tonne in 2018. It was repealed by UCP premier Jason Kenney, but the Supreme Court of Canada ruled the federal carbon tax was constitutional in 2021.
