Some private energy producers who initiated renewable energy projects more than a year ago are facing difficulties in securing financial closure and contributing to the already limited grid capacity.

South African renewable energy projects selected over a year ago to add generation from private producers and help end electricity shortages are struggling to reach financial close due to an escalation in costs and grid capacity, according to one of the developers.

A dozen projects, with a combined capacity of more than 1,000 megawatts, remain hamstrung because of increases in financing and other charges, said Globeleq Chief Executive Officer Mike Scholey.“In South Africa, we’re struggling to deliver due to costs,” he said in an interview on the sidelines of the Africa Energy Forum in Nairobi.

The delays come as the most industrialised nation on the continent suffers from record power cuts due to breakdowns of state-owned Eskom’s ageing coal-fired units.Projects have also been sidelined due to a lack of connections to the national grid. Wind stations were spurned in the sixth round, limiting projects advancing to the next stage as a lobby for the technology warned that the problem could limit investment.

For Globeleq, selling the electricity to private consumers rather than Eskom is one potential solution, Scholey said. “In the short term, this is the way forward: allow direct sale to end-user customers.” The company won the preferred bids in the fifth round as the majority partner in the Ikamva Consortium, which includes Mainstream Renewable Power, Africa Rainbow Energy & Power and H1 Holdings.

UN Official Urges South Sudan to Move Toward ElectionsUN Official Urges South Sudan to Move Toward ElectionsNicholas Haysom, head of the U.N. Mission in South Sudan, told the U.N. Security Council that 2023 is a critical year for the world's youngest country. A new constitution must be drafted and preparations completed for the first national elections scheduled for elections in December 2024, he said. Haysom noted that the fighting in Sudan is also impacting South Sudan's economy, as many goods imported from its northern neighbour have been disrupted, driving up prices. South Sudan's economy is dependent on its oil exports, which Haysom noted go out via Port Sudan. Their interruption could have devastating effects on the economy. After independence from Sudan in July 2011, South Sudan slid into more than five years of civil war, with forces loyal to President Salva Kiir battling supporters of Vice President Riek Machar. Thousands of people died in the war, and more than 2 million fled to neighbouring countries, including Sudan. Since mid-April 2023, when a rivalry between two Sudanese generals turned into open conflict, more than 117,000 people crossed back into South Sudan, seeking safety.
