OAKLAND — In a dramatic twist to a race widely viewed as a test for criminal justice reform candidates, civil rights attorney Pamela Price has pulled ahead of longtime prosecutor Terry Wiley in the bid to be Alameda County’s next District Attorney.
A Price victory would usher in a new era for the District Attorney’s Office, shaking up an office that for decades has been run by a seasoned prosecutor who came up within the office’s ranks. Despite Wiley’s lead for the past six days, Price has put out multiple public statements saying she remains “confident” in ultimate victory. Her campaign did not immediately respond to the news that she has now pulled ahead. Wiley also did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but told KTVU on Monday — when he still held a slim lead — that he expects the race will be close but is “very, very, confident” he will win.
“We don’t know where the votes are coming from, but we do know that progressive candidates performed better with later voters compared to early voters. What we find is later voters tend to be people of color, younger, renters and their votes end up getting counted later,” Ross said. But he added this significant caveat: “I wouldn’t read too much into it.
