The NSW government says it will axe funding for a program diverting alleged offenders with intellectual disabilities and brain injuries from prison, as advocates plead for a funding lifeline.

, more than 68 per cent of participants were diverted from the criminal justice system. Just seven per cent of the 180 participants received a prison sentence.Almost 45 per cent of participants had an intellectual disability; 22 per cent had an acquired brain injury and 13 per cent had borderline intellectual function.

"The over-representation of people with intellectual and cognitive disabilities in the justice system is long and well-established," he said. "A lot of that is about repeat minor offending for want of appropriate disability support."The NSW government appears unconvinced that the program, which cost $1.2 million in the 15 months to September 2018, is delivering value for money.
