Wernick said he can’t remain in the position if the opposition parties don’t trust him

OTTAWA — The head of the federal public service is stepping down following controversy over whether he was too partisan in his testimony about the SNC-Lavalin affair.

“Recent events have led me to conclude that I cannot serve as Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to Cabinet during the upcoming election campaign,” the statement said. The statement said is essential that Canadians see their “world leading public service as non-partisan and there to provide excellent services to Canadians and the governments they elect.”

Wernick will be replaced in the role by Ian Shugart, who currently serves as deputy minister of foreign affairs. A statement from Trudeau said Shugart will take over the job “in the coming weeks.”
