Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra clarified that the release of inmates on account of good behavior does not require his approval nor that of Malacanang.
Guevarra made the clarification amid opposition to the expected release of former Calauan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez who is expected to benefit from the re-computation of his accumulated Good Conduct Time Allowance as a result of the a Supreme Court ruling in June.Last June, the SC issued a ruling on Republic Act 10592 which amended provisions of the Revised Penal Code on the reduction of prison terms.
The petitioners complained that that IRR would not include their GCTAs that they accumulated prior the enactment of RA 10592 in 2013.
