The Earl of Wessex was anxious to meet as many well-wishers as he could to thank them for travelling to pay their respects to the Queen.

Prince Edward has been praised after explaining the reason why he didn't shake hands with mourners outside Buckingham Palace. The Earl and Countess of Wessex were greeted and cheered by the crowd as they emerged from the place on Saturday afternoon.

Edward asked the public where they had travelled from to pay their respects to his mother and and politely waved as he walked past. He later shook a mourners hand, before explaining: "I've been trying to avoid it, only if I do it once, then I get everybody doing it." Meanwhile, his wife was given bouquets and a stuffed toy as she shook hands with those gathered. The Earl of Wessex has told mourners the Queen would "appreciate” the number of people paying their respects.
