Decision expected Tuesday evening
Prince Edward County Council will meet on Tuesday evening for a special session of council, and one of the items on the agenda is to decide the fate of a pair of battery storage projects.
The two proposed battery energy storage sites are located across the road from each other on Mowbray Road. A pair of solar farms already exist on the properties, and the batteries would be set up near the panels and away from homes or roads. Combined, the storage sites could hold up to 24 megawatt hours of extra generated power that can then be fed into the electrical grid as needed.denied support to a much larger battery storage system projectCouncil heard the proposal for the smaller sites at the same meeting, and instructed staff to put together an analysis of the proposals and report back to council before they would make a final decision.
At the previous meeting, councillors were interested in the project, noting that it would use a safer type of battery than the one they denied and wouldn’t be located on prime agriculture land.
