Virtual again this year due to COVID\u002D19, TeleMiracle kicks off its 46th annual telethon on Saturday, March 5.

Misdiagnosed with Meniere’s Disease, what he now knows is severe vertigo plagued him with dizzy spells and seizures starting 40 years ago.

A chef who thrived on camaraderie with staff and customers, he couldn’t work. He couldn’t even get more than a block from home without having to turn around for fear of being without somewhere to sit when a spell hit.“It was getting to a point where I wasn’t leaving the house and depression set in,” Irwin said in an interview Friday. “My life was in danger from my own hands. I was totally out of it. I was fed up because there wasn’t a whole lot of help out there for me.

“I would have had to save probably for five or six years to make that happen and if I had to do that then I don’t think I would have been needing it because I don’t think I would have been here,” said Irwin, who is now 61.last spring, Irwin, who lives in Prince Albert, is able to grocery shop, get to doctors appointments and more, all on his own. He’s also reconnected with his love of helping others by getting involved in his building’s tenant advisory committee to support his neighbours.

“With the help of the scooter, it’s given me more ability to get out, but it’s also given me the power of my own mind to make things work and make arrangements over the winter time when I can’t get around,” Irwin said, giving credit to not only the financial support from TeleMiracle, but the emotional support too.
