Texas GOP officials talk big about being pro-life, but they aren’t pro-mom or pro-baby.
My stepdaughter gave birth to twins — a beautiful boy and girl — in May. Thankfully, mom and babies are healthy. That isn’t the reality for all moms, especially in Texas.SAN ANTONIO — My stepdaughter gave birth to twins — a beautiful boy and girl — in May, and I was reminded of the miracle and beauty of childbirth, the sanctity of new life. The babies, born about six weeks premature, were tiny at under 4 pounds each and spent their first several weeks in neonatal intensive care.
Bringing them into this world was no easy feat. Their mom was on bed rest and in and out of the hospital, sometimes staying for several weeks. Thankfully, mom and babies are healthy. They have support and resources. The picture of maternal health in Texas is alarming. Aby the Department of State Health Services and the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee found 18.3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births — but the numbers are from 2015.
There’s a plan to get updated numbers and information, but Texas officials are suddenly delaying the state’s first major updated count of pregnancy-related deaths in nearly a decade until after the midterms and the Legislature’s biennial session. The delay, blamed by a Department of State Health Services official on a lack of staff and funding, means lawmakers likely won’t use the analysis, covering deaths from 2019, until the 2025 legislative cycle. It means nonprofits seeking grants to support mothers won’t have updated data.Texas delays publication of maternal death data until after midterms, legislative session
Why aren’t Texas mothers prioritized? What are the accurate maternal health numbers? Perhaps a better question is — how well does Texas provide care for mothers and babies? Look past the rhetoric and you will see an abundance of red flags.
