The effects of social media on children — and the urgent need for a new approach — are almost impossible to avoid.
Perhaps it’s best to get phones out of our kids’ hands. The U.S. surgeon general has warned about the possible harms of social media for kids.Twitter, where I follow way too many people, is my go-to for work. Facebook is where I go to interact with family, friends and acquaintances from every stage of my life. I share my columns, our team’s editorials and way too many photos of people, places and things I love and things I don’t, along with other nuggets of randomness.
When my son was in junior high and high school, I was working as a teacher. There, I saw the damage social media inflicted on students. If someone was crying, arguing or in the principal’s office, the drama probably began on social media. Despite 13 being the minimum age required by social media platforms, nearly 40 percent of children 8 through 12 use social media, according to the advisory.
Social media has led to double the risk of “poor mental health outcomes, depression and anxiety,” and there have been childhood deaths linked to suicide, self-harm and risk-taking challenges on social media. And social media may also “perpetuate body dissatisfaction, disordered eating behaviors, social comparison, and low self-esteem, especially among adolescent girls.”The older people are when they begin using social media, the better.
