“Anecdotally, it seems as though the long term drought is acting like a chronic illness where even recent rains and cold winter weather isn’t helping to keep fires from developing,” the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office wrote.
“Pictures on social media suggest some pretty surreal fire behavior given the wet October and December that was observed across the region,” it added. The California Highway Patrol has Highway 1 closed at Rio Road just outside of Carmel-by-the-Sea. The American Red Cross opened a shelter late Friday evening for residents of the Palo Colorado area of Monterey County who received mandatory evacuation orders.
