Two former ambassadors and Andrew Scheer are among those calling on the Liberal government to abandon its non-confrontational approach and take stiffer action
Shelve any talk of a free trade deal; complain to the WTO; expel China’s Winter Olympic athletes. Kick out the ambassador himself.
“So far I can’t perceive any meaningful response by the Canadian government to anything China’s been doing since December,” said the China expert at Ontario’s Brock University. “And I think that’s emboldening the Chinese to recognize they have people within our government who are prepared to bow to their interests.”
Experts say most or all of those actions are a response to the Vancouver arrest in December of Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei Technologies executive U.S. authorities want to extradite from Canada on fraud charges. But Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested earlier this week the government has no plans to adopt a more aggressive tack.
“You feel better emotionally by standing tall, by feeling tough,” said the former researcher with China’s State Economic and Trade Commission. “But I’m afraid that may not be the best option to solve the problem.”
