Dr. James Still, known as the "Black Doctor of the Pines," was a medical doctor and herbalist in the 1800s. An effort is underway to preserve a historic site that restorers say will preserve the legacy of the self-taught South Jersey physicianStill was born in 1812 to parents who were former slaves, according to a state park service report. He was one of 18 children.
Still taught himself about plants and herbal remedies after being denied a formal education as a medical doctor. “His practice became a symbol of hope and resilience for African Americans and marginalized communities, who found solace and healing in his care,” Preservation New Jersey said. “Dr. Still’s contributions to medicine extended beyond his time; his writings on herbal remedies and medical treatments would later influence generations of herbalists and holistic practitioners.”
A portrait of Dr. James Still hangs in the Dr. James Still Historical Site and Educational Center. with plans to restore it. It funded the stabilization of the exterior of the building in 2021. Ongoing work includes the restoration of the interior and reconstructing the porches.
