Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie slams a news outlet for calling him 'Mampara of the Week'.
Gayton McKenzie trended on social media for releasing a list of beneficiaries from the 2020 Covid-19 relief funds, following a public promise to name and shame them.“Surely if Gayton is so desperate to become a popular minister there must be positive interventions he can make in his department without exploiting the suffering of artists,” wrote the publication.
To which McKenzie replied: “You expected the worst from me, I disappointed you greatly. Prepare to make me “Mampara of the Year” because I am going to deliver greatly and make things better for Artist, Creatives, Sportspeople.the names of artists and sports professionals who benefited financially from the department’s Covid-19 relief fund a week ago. He also revealed that the department would probe cases of people who were on the list but did not receive money.
“We already have people who came forward that didn’t receive money nor applied but are listed as having received. We have people not aligned to the arts who received money, we saw people who are not from South Africa benefiting. Wait and see after all lists have been released,” said McKenzie on X.
The list will include ppl who received grant funding & money during Covid.We should not include people who was asked to perform and got paid on the list. I have been bombarded by ppl saying that they don’t get help,Winnie just reached out to me saying she doesn't understand why her name is on the Sports COVID-19 list as she neither applied nor receive any funds.
