The Gunners made three alterations from their win over Manchester United, as they recalled Takehero Tomiyasu, Rob Holding and Gabriel Martinelli while West Ham rested Michail Antonio on the bench.
Despite their resurgence, David Moyes' charges went behind seven minutes from the half-time break after Holding guided Bukayo Saka's cross into the open far corner. Mikel Arteta's troops were more assertive coming from the half-time break and Gabriel restored their lead nine minutes into the second stanza with a free header at the back post from Saka's cross that was fumbled by shot-stopper, formerly with Arsenal, Lukasz Fabianski.
