Some Premier League clubs are facing a race against time to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules

Premier League clubs are scrambling to balance their books ahead of the Premier League's deadline of June 30, which marks the end of the accounting period for each league season.

Which clubs are affected? Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United are five of the clubs worst affected by PSR rules, as highlighted by their recent activity in the transfer market. Concerns have been raised by the Premier League regarding clubs inflating the valuations of players involved in such deals, which will significantly help ease the worries of the clubs involved.

It means their calculated value, determined by their original purchase price and time left on their contract, is taken off the figure they are sold for. Forest, meanwhile, lost four points after their accounts for 2022-23 breached the £61m threshold by £34.5m. The Tricky Trees' losses were limited to £61m, instead of £105m, as they spent two years of this assessment in the Championship. Their attempt to appeal this decision was later rejected.

The big change will see clubs in Europe restricted to spending a maximum of 70 per cent of their total revenue on their squad and can spend only a maximum of the multiple earned by the bottom club in TV revenue. It is believed the anchoring multiple will be set at 4.5.
