United were without Ronaldo after the tragic death of his son. Ralf Rangnick made four changes to his team from the line-up that started against Norwich. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Nemanja Matic, Phil Jones and Marcus Rashford all started, while Jadon Sancho, Jesse Lingard and Alex Telles dropped to the bench.
Liverpool came flying out of the blocks and took a fifth-minute lead. They worked the ball out from the back before Sadio Mane sent Mohamed Salah into acres of space down the right flank and the Egyptian sent a low cross into the middle that Luis Diaz sweeped past David De Gea with ease. It was less of a one-sided affair in the second half, however, with Klopp clearly unhappy with his side for allowing United to build some confidence.
