COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In a major escalation less than a week before the May 3 primary election, a Washington, D.C. group backing former state treasurer Josh Mandel is publicly attacking ex-President Donald Trump over his endorsement of J.D.

The Club for Growth previously had aired ads highlighting Vance’s past as an anti-Trump commentator in 2016.explicitly questions the former president’s judgment for endorsing Vance for U.S. Senate in Ohio. It splices news clips documenting Trump’s endorsement of Mitt Romney’s 2018 Senate campaign alongside statements Vance made in 2016 attacking Trump, including saying that some people voted for Trump “for racist reasons” and saying he may vote for Hillary Clinton.

“There is a war for the soul of the Republican Party, and I’m proud to be on the side of President Trump,” Vance said., drastically changing the dynamics in late stages of the race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Rob Portman.
