Power sector policy changes will unlock significant value
Seventy-five billion rands! That is the estimated value of construction sector-related economic activity which could potentially be unlocked over the next few years following the recent announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa to allow businesses to produce up to 100MW of power without the need for a generation license from the National Energy Regulator of SA .
Importantly, a number of businesses in the mining, property and industrial sectors have already spent a lot of time on their project development activities and won’t be starting from scratch. We are aware of dozens of projects that are well advanced and this will fast-track their timelines for implementation.
An interesting subtrend emerging here is that organisations are actively seeking out IPPs with strong broad-based black economic empowerment credentials Self-generation would displace expensive power procured from the utility and help ensure energy security.
