Senior longs to be Poway’s 16th individual state champion; 'I’ve been dreaming about it since I was a little kid'
A 1-hour, 45-minute Poway High wrestling practice was coming to a close. There had been technique drills, one-on-one sparring and live wrestling.Now it was time for sprints. Up and back across the wrestling room once. Then two reps. Then three. Then a final up and back.Senior Luke Condon, who wrestles at 172 pounds, won every one of his sprints — even the last one, when a freshman went all-out to catch him.
The Titans have won four state titles and finished second five times. Fifteen Poway wrestlers have won 18 state titles, three wrestlers winning two crowns.state champ and have his picture encased in a frame, hanging from a wall inside the wrestling room.Condon finished third at the state meet last year. He’s 30-1 and ranked second in the 172-pound class this year.
“A lot of kids when they’re injured, you don’t see them for two, three months,” said Meyers. “He still came to practice every day, worked hard every day.” Meyers holds a philosophy, saying you should only tend to things that you can count on one hand. In other words, don’t be swayed by too many outside distractions. Condon, who has a 4.1 GPA, said he carries three main focuses: family, academics and wrestling, in that order.
Condon needed all three facets at last month’s Reno Tournament of Champions. Condon lost his first match and Meyers let him know in very direct terms the reason he lost 2-1 was he didn’t keep his hands low enough in the stand-up position.
