In a classic pitchers’ duel between two of the best softball pitchers in the San Diego Section, Poway High prevailed with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 3-2 victory over Rancho Bernardo in the Open Division championship game Saturday at UC San Diego.
“This is the game everyone in the county wanted to see,” Bennet said. “Best two teams who are rivals.”Both teams will advance to the Southern California Regionals next week.For about two seconds, it seemed like Christian High needed one more inning to claim a San Diego Section softball championship.Instead of the ground ball to end a rally, a bad hop on Andrea de la Trinidad’s grounder to second base produced two runs and wiped put a one-run deficit as No. 1-seeded Imperial claimed the victory.
Imperial got an inside-the-park home run by the ninth-place hitter, Mariana Pesqueira, slicing the deficit to one run. When only 10 players reported for tryouts this spring at Madison, it appeared as if the chances of winning the first San Diego Section title would never happen.
