New local film Pou has decent visual effects but is less terror and more bizarro fever dream
Anna Pohl has grown up in an institutionalised space: a puritanical, Calvinist organisation known simply as The Foundation. Their mission is to provide a place of 'righteous innocence' for young women - to allow them to develop away from the 'corruptions' of the outside world.Gothic horror is a difficult-to-define subgenre that's not so prevalent in the cinematic landscape, but it does elicit certain expectations when a film calls itself that.
The cast worked with what they had, and despite the narrative's instability, the actors weren't the worst parts of the film. I quite enjoyed stalwart Johan Botha’s rendition of a self-righteous theologian that any Afrikaner will recognise as the 'wyk Satan wyk'-style of church preachings. In another film, it could have been quite a performance, and Botha's talents were wasted here.
