One of SF’s best burger joints is not what you’d expect.
After a neighborhood bartender stopped a crew of burglars from robbing his store and burger joint one night, owner Jesse Ganim named a burger after the savior — the Nigel. It’s been on the menu at Ganim’s Market ever since.

Over time, Ahmad slowly phased out the burritos, but the burgers remained. People loved the handmade seasoned patties and delicious topping combinations that add a little something extra. They’re still some of San Francisco’s best burgers.
When you enter the small shop, it’s hard to miss the glass-encased refrigerators filled with hundreds of sodas and beers from different brands. Mismatching tables and chairs occupy the left side of the store, where a large window overlooks the street corner. The register sits dead center, where a man with thin black hair, narrow-rimmed glasses and a sweet smile stands ready to take your order.The eatery really does serve the gamut of San Franciscans.
“If somebody requests something, we always try and get it in,” Jesse said, of his customer-first stocking policy.
