Portsmouth in southern England wants to establish a formal sister city link with Cape Town.
Sister city links are established, either legally or through a social agreement, to promote cultural and commercial exchanges. The City of Cape Town already, formed through declarations of cooperation and memorandums of agreement. One of the key reasons for this proposed link with Cape Town, as told to the Portsmouth City Council, is the move to establish links beyond Europe following Brexit.
But it's not just Brexit and the prospect of increased trade between the two cities supporting the push for Portsmouth and Cape Town to merge."The Royal Navy has a long history with Cape Town and is still a regular port of call to conduct maintenance, stores, personnel transfers and R&R," explained the proposal.
