Porter lost to Nacogdoches 51-35 on Friday evening, failing to secure a District 16-5A...

Porter’s Ireland Harrington gets tangles up against Nacogdoches’ Tatyana Walker in the second quarter of a District 16-5A high school basketball game at Porter High School, Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, in Porter.PORTER — Porter’s girls basketball team surrendered control of its own destiny Friday night.

Now Porter needs a win against first-place Huntsville and a Nacogdoches loss to second-place Lufkin on Tuesday to keep its playoff hopes alive. “I absolutely feel that ,” Porter coach Clarneva Pierre said. “We should’ve won this game. I felt like we were mentally prepared but we didn’t execute the game-plan. We talked about it, we knew what to do, but physically we didn’t execute what we knew was coming.”“Our aggressiveness to get to the basket wasn’t there,” Pierre said of the difference between the two games. “I saw a lot of moments where we had gaps we could have penetrated and we didn’t go full speed at it.

After a 4-0 start, the Spartans were outscored 11-0 as the Dragons ran away and never looked back, using their hectic defense to score in transition or get to the free throw line. Nacogdoches led by eight after the first quarter, 11 at halftime and 17 after the third quarter.“We didn’t match their defensive intensity,” Pierre said. “We started off in good shape and then kind of got comfortable. They came in with the intensity they needed to separate, and they did.

So I was quite late to the party on these. I only bought them last summer. But I think that's when you know you found a true forever piece, when they've been around for a few years, and you're still thinking about buying them\u2014then you know it's something that you really have to have. So I wore them every day last summer, whether that was with like a wide-leg pant, a long-line short...I think the only thing I didn't really wear them to was an evening event or a wedding. I'm already thinking about the tan ones for next summer, because they've definitely got another hopefully a long time left in them.'
