Multiple projects, such as expanding the only park on the city’s southwest corner by 2.5 acres, are included

A plan to rework the bayfront in National City to include a bikeway, an expansion of Pepper Park, waterfront hotels and a thriving commercial zone was unanimously approved Wednesday by the Port of San Diego.

The work began nearly a decade ago with the Port, National City, local businesses and community members finding ways to grow public amenities and commercial space while accommodating vehicle importer Pasha Automotive Services, the Port’s largest tenant anchored at the National City Marine Terminal. A major feature of the plan is the expansion of Pepper Park by 2.5 acres. In a city historically known to have some of the highest levels of air pollution caused by diesel contamination, particularly in the western areas, residents have long pushed for more recreational opportunities. This year, many had a chance to brainstorm how toat the park. The project also looks to build National City’s segment of the Bayshore bikeway along Marina Way and McKinley Avenue.
