The Poppy's plastic stem has been replaced by a paper 'leaf with a crease' in a bid to cut down on the waste from the 45 million sold across England, Wales and Northern Ireland each year
that ditches the plastic stem and core after pressure from anti-waste campaigners.symbol since 1995 will see it made entirely out of paper that comes “from a blend of renewable fibres” – with 50 per cent recovered from waste used in the production of coffee cups, and 50 per cent from a sustainable wood source.
Mr Taylor-Whyte explained that “over three years of work” has gone into “getting right” the new poppy, including redesigning the production line, consulting with veterans and poppy sellers, and “road-testing” the new design. When poppies go on sale in October, remaining stocks of the existing design featuring plastic stems will still be on sale alongside the new variant “to reduce any waste of poppies already produced,” the RBL said. But production has stopped on the existing design, meaning they will only be available until stocks have run down.
