NEW ORLEANS - It’s a safe bet the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023 will have a heavy Spurs presence after point guard Tony Parker and coach Gregg Popovich - yes, Popovich - were announced Wednesday as first-time nominees.
Joining Parker and Gasol as first-time player nominees are slam-dunk first-ballot picks Dirk Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade. Hammon, who coached the Las Vegas Aces to a WNBA title last season after serving as an assistant on Popovich’s staff for eights seasons, is nominated as a player following six All-Star seasons during a 16-year playing career.
The entire Class of 2023, including those selected by the direct-elect committees, will be unveiled April 1 during the NCAA Final Four in Houston in a nationally televised broadcast.The Spurs arrived in New Orleans with renewed confidence in their bench after five reserves scored in double figures in Monday’s win at Houston.
It was just the second time in the past six years the Spurs have had at least five reserves score in double figures in a game.
