Live – Pope in Quebec: ‘Rescind the Doctrine’ protest greets pope at mass
Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica is a popular pilgrimage site, designated a national shrine by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, welcomes almost 1 million visitors annually. It was in 1658 that Bretons at sea, saved by their prayers to Saint Anne, launched the project to build a shrine in her honour.
The building is in the neo-Romanesque style and is built in the shape of a cross. The basilica is about 100 metres high, from the floor to the top of its bell towers. It is approximately 60 metres wide at the crossing of the transepts and 50 metres wide at the front. The building is approximately 100 metres long.
The Basilica of Sainte-Anne de Beaupré has a statue of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, whose name means “the one who goes forward hesitating” in the Iroquois language. The stone sculpture welcomes pilgrims and visitors as they approach the main entrance to the temple. This work of art honours the saint’s exceptional Christian faith. Kateri Tekakwitha is a role model for countless Indigenous Christians with many praying before the statue as part of their annual pilgrimage to the basilica.
Born in 1656 in Ossernenon, on the banks of the Mohawk River in New York State, Saint Katrei is highly venerated by many nations, particularly the Iroquois. On Oct. 21, 2012, she became the first North American Indigenous woman to be canonized. At the age of four, she lost her entire family to an epidemic of smallpox that struck the region from 1661 to 1663. Her eyesight was considerably impaired and her face remained “grainy” from the effects of this terrible disease until her death.
