On the first full day of his visit to Canada, Pope Francis will head to the site of a former Alberta residential school, where many expect he will elaborate on the apology he made in Rome this spring. Here's what more is on his agenda:

These edicts laid the ground for something called the Doctrine of Discovery, a legal principle used to claim European sovereignty over Indigenous land. The Anglican and United Church have already repudiated the doctrine. For some, this question is the most suspenseful part of the six-day, three-city papal visit, which has been scripted down to the minute: will Francis or won’t Francis turn his back on 500 years of tradition?The Catholic Register, a Canadian religious publication,that the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops already rejected the thinking that underpins the Doctrine of Discovery.
In 2016, one year after the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report into residential schools, the group issued a 15-page"response," which said, in part: "We reject the assertion that Europeans could determine whether land was used or occupied by Indigenous people without consulting those people."that Indigenous people"ought to have had their fundamental human rights recognized and respected in the past" and that there is"no basis" in Catholic theology that justifies the seizure of Indigenous land.
